While wearing her favorite African designers, one of whom is Tsemaye Binite, Danai Gurira, who has made a name for herself as of late in both the film and theater industries, discusses her upbringing and the motivation behind her work.
She does not consider herself a minority she says as she sees people who look like her across the world- in London, Haiti, Trinidad, and in Brooklyn.
She reveals that while she was born in Iowa in the US, her family relocated to their native Zimbabwe when she was just 5. It was there that she spent most of her youth before moving to the US to attend university.
On the influences of her work, she says her motivation has always been to tell stories from the perspective of the African and to showcase the talent of those from these groups who often do not get the chance to star in a major way on stage.
