Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie has recently been on a Made-in-Nigeria campaign where she is wearing only items from Nigerian fashion brands.
On an Instagram account being managed by her nieces, Adichie can be seen wearing apparel from several Nigerian brands at public functions held over recent weeks. Some of the Nigerian brands she has worn recently are Nuraniya, Fia Factory, Lola Baej, Grey, and Style Temple. Gozel Green, a label founded by London based twin sisters, appears to be her most frequented brand thus far.
In embarking on this campaign, Adichie is helping draw attention to the fashion industry in Nigeria and Africa which boasts many talented brands. It also harkens to her now popular 2009 TED Talk where she spoke of the dangers of the single story. In highlighting the fashion creativity coming out of Africa, Adichie is using her star power to shed light on an aspect of Africa few are familiar with and helping add a layer to the narrative told of Africa. We also love that all her looks are not styles made of print fabric- as African fashion is so much more than that.
